It’s been a minute.
That’s because I wanted to wait until I had my newest strip finished to share with you. But that strip took far longer than expected.
In truth I started this strip years ago. Came back to it years later, redraw it, put it back on the shelf unfinished. And finally a couple of months ago I pulled it back out and slow completed it.
I’ve never put more work into a single comic strip and I have no idea if it was worth it. I’ll let you decide.
But first let me give you some background. The movie Tombstone is one of my absolute favorites. Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Doc Holliday ranks up with my other favorite movie characters, such as Indiana Jones, Han Solo, Marty McFly, and Heath Ledger’s Joker.
So it’s no surprise that once upon a time I had a dream that reimagined a famous scene from said movie. The comic strip below plays out pretty much like my dream with a tiny bit of creative license. For whatever reason I thought it would make a fun little comic, and would be quick and easy to do. Well I had half of that right. If nothing else it was a good learning experience.
The setup, if you haven’t seen the movie, is Johnny Ringo is waiting for Wyatt Earp to meet him so that they can have a duel. Doc Holliday knows that Wyatt can’t beat Johnny in a duel and goes in his place. Honestly, if you haven’t seen the movie then this comic might not be for you. But hopefully you can at least enjoy the artwork and the overall silliness of it. But then go watch Tombstone. Every one of Doc’s lines in it are quotable.
Bonus: Here’s the first draft I made years ago. You should be able to see a growth in my art skills. Especially with the closeup of Johnny Ringo’s face.
Okay! That’s it for this month. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving if you celebrate it where you are. If not, then I hope you have a great rest of your November.
Next time I’ll tell you about the comic book I’ve been working on called “SLICE”.
